On the morning of December 7, 2002, the world grew brighter as the legacy of Jayla Michelle began. From a young age, Jayla brought vibrancy and creativity to every space she entered, carrying with her a humble yet tenacious spirit. Her infectious personality and radiant smile were truly one of a kind, and she was deeply loved. A naturally curious child, Jayla was always eager to learn and figure things out. She was fiercely independent and a devoted helper to her siblings. As the eldest of seven, she was present for the births of all but the youngest in 2022, as she was navigating her own life’s journey at the time.
Jayla was a risk-taker who embraced the excitement of life. She was fearless in trying new things and lived with an open heart. In elementary school, she joined the drama club, participated in the PATS program for gifted students, played soccer and participated in Girl Scouts. In middle school, she ran track and played the saxophone. In high school, she thrived in NJROTC for four years, engaging in volunteer work, playing softball and volleyball, singing in the chorus, and even cheering for a year. Whatever goal she set her mind to, she pursued with determination and passion.
As a Take Stock Scholar, Jayla earned a full scholarship and aspired to become an OBGYN, though her life was cut short before achieving that dream. She married, fulfilling one of her heartfelt desires, and while she never became a mother, her love for children was undeniable. After her passing, we learned she quietly endured losses that mirrored our own grief.
Music was a cornerstone of Jayla’s life—she loved all genres and was always singing. Over the years, she honed her talent, even recording music that many of us didn’t hear until after her passing. Fashion was another passion; she loved clothes, makeup, purses, and nails. Her fascination with nails began in childhood and grew into a signature style, with her nails becoming longer and more expressive as she grew older.
Jayla adored the movie Coraline so much that she dyed her hair blue as a teen. Her favorite holidays were a split between Halloween and Christmas, with Jack Skellington as her favorite character. Disney World was her cherished travel destination, and her last visit was in 2021 to celebrate her graduation. We had planned to return together to explore Epcot’s culinary delights—a dream we now carry in her memory.
Jayla’s laughter, her silly faces, and her unique spirit are treasures we will hold onto forever. She carried a light within her that allowed others to shine, and on the morning of April 26, 2024, we believe she became that light itself. Now, we carry her with us, ensuring her story continues to illuminate the world and that her voice will always be heard.

A soul too bright to be confined to this world alone.
