WeCan with Narcan

Stop the Stigma

One of our main goals and mission is to stop the stigma and save lives.

Why? Stigma often prevents people from taking action that could save a life. It's essential that every place- every home, customer service- based business, school, and community- recognize the importance of carrying Narcan (naloxone) an opioid reversal medication. When the stigma is removed, no one has to feel ashamed or afraid to carry Narcan. Narcan has the power to make a life-or-death difference and we believe it should be accessible everywhere.

Narcan, or naloxone, is a life-saving medication designed to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. It’s an essential tool in addressing substance use disorder (SUD), a medical condition characterized by the compulsive use of substances despite harmful consequences.

Narcan works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain, quickly reversing the effects of opioids that can suppress breathing and lead to death. It is effective against a wide range of opioids, including:

• Prescription painkillers such as oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), morphine, and codeine

• Synthetic opioids like fentanyl and carfentanil, which are significantly more potent

• Heroin, an illicit opioid that continues to devastate communities

While Narcan is a critical tool for addressing overdoses caused by substance use disorder, the need for it goes far beyond addiction.

Take, for example, the story of an elderly woman who accidentally took her medication twice—once before bed and again after forgetting she had already taken it. That simple mistake led to an overdose. Because someone in her home had Narcan, her life was saved.

Or consider the reality of keeping medications safe from children and teens. Even the most diligent parents know that accidents can happen. Kids are curious, and sometimes they gain access to medications. In these moments, Narcan could mean the difference between life and death.

It’s not just about addiction—it’s about being prepared for the unexpected. Whether it’s someone battling substance use disorder, a person who has accidentally taking too much of their prescribed medication, or a child getting into something they shouldn’t, Narcan can save lives!

By carrying Narcan, we can fight the stigma, protect our communities, and make sure no one is left without hope in a crisis.

WeCAN with Narcan!

Administering this life-saving medication during an opioid overdose can be intimidating, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the process. However, Narcan is designed for ease of use, even by individuals without medical training. The nasal spray is straightforward: simply insert the tip into the person’s nostril and press the plunger to release the medication. Acting promptly and confidently can make a critical difference in such emergencies.
